Background of the Study
Mobile banking has revolutionized the delivery of financial services, particularly in emerging markets such as Nigeria. Ecobank Nigeria has been proactive in enhancing its mobile banking services to drive user adoption and improve overall customer satisfaction. Recent enhancements include the development of a user-friendly mobile app, improved security features such as biometric authentication, and seamless integration with digital payment systems (Oluwaseun, 2023). These innovations are designed to simplify banking transactions, reduce processing times, and provide a more secure platform for users.
The bank’s strategic focus on mobile banking is driven by the high penetration of mobile devices in Nigeria and the growing demand for digital financial services. By offering innovative features and a responsive user interface, Ecobank Nigeria aims to attract a broader customer base, including tech-savvy millennials and underserved populations who may not have easy access to traditional banking channels (Adeniran, 2024). Additionally, the mobile banking enhancements facilitate real-time transaction monitoring and personalized financial management tools, which empower users to manage their finances more effectively.
Furthermore, the integration of mobile banking with other digital platforms, such as social media and e-commerce, has created a holistic digital ecosystem that enhances customer engagement and loyalty. The bank’s continuous investment in technology and customer service training underscores its commitment to improving the digital banking experience. Regulatory support and increasing financial inclusion initiatives further complement these efforts, positioning Ecobank Nigeria as a leader in mobile banking innovation (Ekemini, 2025).
However, challenges such as network reliability, digital literacy among users, and occasional technical glitches continue to impact user adoption rates. This study investigates how mobile banking service enhancements influence user adoption at Ecobank Nigeria, exploring both the benefits and obstacles associated with these digital initiatives.

Statement of the Problem
Despite substantial improvements in mobile banking services, Ecobank Nigeria faces challenges that impede widespread user adoption. One significant problem is network reliability; in certain regions, intermittent connectivity issues result in delayed transactions and app crashes, undermining user confidence (Babatunde, 2023). Additionally, while the mobile app offers advanced features, there remains a segment of the population with limited digital literacy who find it difficult to navigate the application effectively. This gap in user competence reduces the overall adoption rate of mobile banking services.
Furthermore, technical glitches such as software bugs and compatibility issues with older mobile devices have occasionally disrupted the seamless functioning of the mobile banking platform. Such issues not only frustrate users but also lead to negative perceptions about the reliability of digital banking services offered by Ecobank Nigeria (Ogunleye, 2024). The challenge of continuously updating and maintaining the mobile platform to meet rapidly evolving technological standards also poses financial and operational constraints for the bank.
Moreover, while marketing efforts have increased awareness, the conversion of awareness into active usage remains suboptimal. The lack of comprehensive customer support and targeted digital literacy programs further exacerbates these challenges. This study seeks to identify the underlying factors that limit mobile banking adoption and to propose strategic interventions to overcome these barriers, thereby enhancing the overall digital banking experience.
